Welcome to the vasculitis and lupus clinic. There has been a vasculitis and lupus clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital since 1987 and it currently cares for over 1,000 patients.

The medical conditions

The vasculitis and lupus clinic specialises in looking after patients with diseases caused by an overactive immune system (autoimmune diseases).

The most common of these diseases, that affect multiple parts of the body, are vasculitis and lupus (also known as SLE). However, the clinic also receives referrals of patients with other rare, autoimmune diseases. The names of some of the diseases are listed below:

 Vasculitis diseases

  • Wegener’s granulomatosis
  • Microscopic polyangiitis
  • Churg-Strauss angiitis
  • Polyarteritis nodosa
  • Giant cell arteritis
  • Takayasu’s arteritis
  • Cryogobulinaemia
  • Henoch-Schonlein purpura
  • Lupus (SLE)
  • Behcet’s disease
  • Autoimmune deafness
  • Autoinflammatory syndromes

The staff

Dr Afzal Chaudhry, Dr David Jayne, Stella Burns, Dr Lisa Willcocks, Sue Reid.

The medical staff includes three NHS consultants, Dr Afzal Chaudhry, Dr David Jayne and Dr Lisa Willcocksand an honorary consultant, Professor Ken Smith. They have all been trained in kidney medicine and have many years experience in managing autoimmune conditions. Specialist registrars also work in the clinic under the supervision of the consultants.

The nursing staff is led by a vasculitis specialist nurse, Stella Burns, and includes a lupus nurse, Jane Hollis, and research nurses, Karen Dahlsveen and Biljana Brezina.

Links to other departments

Because vasculitis and lupus can affect multiple parts of the body, the joint care of patients with consultants from other departments is an important aspect of the clinic. Regular links have been established with:

ENT department Mr Pyuish Jani
Neurology Dr Alasdair Coles
Ophthalmology Dr Paul Meyer
Respiratory medicine Dr Pasupathy Sivasothy
Rheumatology Dr Frances Hall

There is also a regular pregnancy clinic for mothers with vasculitis and lupus held at the Rosie Hospital.

Research at the vasculitis and lupus clinic

Many patients attending the clinic will be invited to take part in research projects investigating the causes and treatments for their illnesses.

Patients will not be included in studies without their knowledge and written consent.
