Department of

00:00:13:00 - 00:00:16:02

Vascular Surgery is one of the biggest units in the country.

00:00:16:08 - 00:00:19:13

We work what we call a hub and spoke arrangement.

00:00:19:19 - 00:00:23:01

That means that although all our surgeons work out of Addenbrooke’s,

00:00:23:07 - 00:00:27:18

we also supply vascular services or vascular surgery services to the

00:00:27:18 - 00:00:32:00

populations of Peterborough, Huntingdon, Bury St Edmunds and King’s Lynn.

00:00:32:15 - 00:00:37:11

By working this hub and spoke arrangement, what we aim to do is to deliver as much

00:00:37:11 - 00:00:41:23

of our vascular service to the community as close to the patients as possible.

00:00:42:09 - 00:00:46:11

We also serve Papworth Hospital, which is a world renowned centre

00:00:46:11 - 00:00:51:11

for dealing with conditions that affect the heart and lungs.

00:00:53:16 - 00:00:56:03

We're extremely proud to have extensive involvement

00:00:56:03 - 00:01:00:00

in a large number of local, national and international research projects,

00:01:00:11 - 00:01:03:23

whether it's in the field of carotid imaging, frailty,

00:01:03:23 - 00:01:07:07

large clinical trials and venous disease or genetics.

00:01:07:20 - 00:01:11:08

Members of the department continue to publish widely in high impact journals.

00:01:11:19 - 00:01:14:04

The second aspect is innovation, in order to be able

00:01:14:04 - 00:01:17:00

to offer the latest treatments, whether it's for complex abdominal

00:01:17:09 - 00:01:20:16

aneurysms or patients with difficult and deep venous problems

00:01:20:16 - 00:01:25:11

or ulceration.

00:01:25:11 - 00:01:27:13

In the last couple of years, we’ve spent a lot of time

00:01:27:22 - 00:01:31:02

developing a quality improvement framework for peripheral artery disease,

00:01:31:14 - 00:01:34:08

and I'm pleased to say that now being implemented across England

00:01:34:17 - 00:01:37:14

and Cambridge is one of the early adopting centres.

00:01:38:02 - 00:01:42:14

We also have strong links to the medical school, providing

00:01:42:14 - 00:01:46:01

teaching to the medical students and often have them attached

00:01:46:01 - 00:01:49:03

to the vascular firm.

00:01:51:18 - 00:01:52:22

We perform

00:01:52:22 - 00:01:56:07

many procedures both as elective and emergency procedures.

00:01:56:14 - 00:01:59:01

We work closely with the vascular surgical department.

00:01:59:13 - 00:02:03:21

We perform many procedures on the arteries and veins in the leg

00:02:03:21 - 00:02:07:23

for both ulcers and claudication and critical ischemia,

00:02:08:05 - 00:02:13:16

we also treat the aorta with respect to aneurysm disease.

00:02:15:23 - 00:02:18:00

We have a very well designed

00:02:18:00 - 00:02:22:07

and established teaching program, as well as training opportunities,

00:02:22:15 - 00:02:25:20

research opportunities for all the vascular trainees.

00:02:26:03 - 00:02:29:16

You also have a very well established teaching and training

00:02:30:00 - 00:02:32:16

exchange program with international trainees.

00:02:32:24 - 00:02:35:11

Such as from Australia and Sri Lanka.

00:02:40:01 - 00:02:41:13

We are a specialist team performing

00:02:41:13 - 00:02:47:01

advanced duplex ultrasound investigations to assess blood vessels and blood flow

00:02:47:01 - 00:02:50:19

to support the vascular surgery team and other teams within the hospital.

00:02:55:03 - 00:02:55:14

Staff

00:02:55:14 - 00:02:58:20

to skilled at looking after post-operative patients who've undergone

00:02:58:20 - 00:03:03:15

major surgery, such as aneurysm repairs, amputations,

00:03:03:21 - 00:03:06:16

EVARs, major bypasses.

00:03:07:00 - 00:03:11:18

These patients often require regional blocks, epidurals and TPN.

00:03:12:09 - 00:03:14:19

We also have thrombolysis deep venous

00:03:14:19 - 00:03:17:14

stenting, and iloprost infusions on the wards.

00:03:18:09 - 00:03:22:09

As a specialist amputee physiotherapy team, we work closely

00:03:22:09 - 00:03:25:18

with the vascular service and have an integrated approach

00:03:26:04 - 00:03:29:08

which includes an on-site prosthetics department.

00:03:30:03 - 00:03:34:05

We see patients throughout their journey from pre-amputation discussion

00:03:34:15 - 00:03:38:01

helping alleviate the fear of this life-changing event

00:03:38:16 - 00:03:41:11

through to maximising their independence at home.

00:03:42:19 - 00:03:43:23

I had an

00:03:44:13 - 00:03:47:00

aneurysm on my aorta,

00:03:48:09 - 00:03:50:11

which was 10cm

00:03:51:16 - 00:03:54:18

where they operated on, had it all plumbed

00:03:54:18 - 00:03:58:18

in, all sorted out, and now back on the way home.

00:03:59:11 - 00:04:02:15

The nurses and the staff are very good, food’s excellent.

00:04:03:05 - 00:04:05:22

And I am now walking about on a leg that I

00:04:05:22 - 00:04:20:13

should probably never had.

Vascular surgery is the specialty in which diseases of the vascular system or arteries and veins are managed, largely via surgical intervention.

Vascular outpatients

Vascular clinics are held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week in clinic 4 on level 3 of outpatients. These are one-stop assessment clinics, with colour duplex ultrasound available to assist rapid diagnosis.

Vascular inpatients

Elective vascular patients are admitted to ward J3 on the morning of their procedure.
Post procedure, patients are transferred to ward L5.
