It’s an essential date for job hunters!

If you are under the impression it’s mainly doctors and nurses who work at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, then think again!

Because there is an army of people who undertake a broad range of behind-the-scenes roles which are non-clinical, yet essential to the smooth-running of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the welfare of patients.A member of the finance team

Now, for the first time, the hospital is to hold an NHS Essential Services Open Day so job hunters – including those just leaving school or college - can find out more about working for the Trust and the different opportunities.

It will be between 9am and 2pm on Saturday, 30 November, at the Deakin Centre in Richard Howe Way, adjacent to the main Addenbrooke’s car park (car park one) and will include demonstrations, displays and tours around parts of the hospital usually tucked away from public view.

Visitors will learn about the benefits of working for a world-famous teaching hospital, the opportunities to climb up the career ladder, the training on offer and the varied range of jobs, apprenticeships and work experience.

Just some of those who make a difference are the hospital’s call centre staff who, from their base under the Addenbrooke’s Treatment Centre, calmly and efficiently field around 1.2 million calls each year. 

Porters are not only a frequent sight moving patients around the hospital, but are also found negotiating the miles of service tunnels under the hospital with tugs laden with vital supplies.

Tug drivers play an important roleThe Trust needs those good with numbers – in the last financial year there was the small matter of 219,904 payslips to prepare along with 124,000 invoices to check and pay. And that’s only scraping the surface.

The creative services of the communications team is constantly in demand –servicing thousands of media enquiries each year, drafting media releases, facilitating film crews, updating social media and assisting at VIP visits.

With the hospital the size of a small town, the Trust also employs administrators, receptionists, ward clerks, secretaries, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, maintenance staff, engineers, IT experts, fire safety officers and domestic staff. And so the list goes on.

The Trust welcomes school, college and university students, experienced workers, people returning to work and those interested in working part-time, full-time, via the staff bank, or through work experience or apprenticeship schemes.

The event comes hot on the heels of other CUH recruitment days to highlight the work of nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists and others. 

Deputy director of workforce Annesley Donald said: “While some staff may not come into contact with patients on a daily basis, they are absolutely essential to the smooth-running of our hospitals, and that benefits the thousands of patients and visitors who come here every year.

 “Our message to anyone looking for a new job is to come along to our open day and find out more about the roles here, since they are incredibly varied and always very rewarding.”
