How would you like us to communicate with you?

We want everyone to be able to access and understand information about their care.

If you have a disability, impairment, sensory loss, or if English is not your first language, we can provide information and communication support to help you access our services.

We follow the Accessible Information Standard, which helps ensure that people receive information in a format they can understand and the support they need to communicate effectively.

We:

  • ask if you have any information or communication needs, and how we can meet them
  • record these needs clearly
  • flag your record so staff are aware of your needs
  • share your needs with other NHS and social care services, with your permission
  • provide information in accessible formats where possible
  • arrange communication support when needed

Non-urgent advice: How to get support

Please let us know about any information or communication needs as early as possible.

You can:

  • email accessibility
  • call 01223 256998 (option 1)
  • tell the receptionist when you arrive
  • tell the nursing staff if you are admitted to the hospital

Whether you are a patient, family member or carer, we will do our best to support your needs.

Information in accessible formats

We may be able to provide information in alternative formats, including:

  • large print
  • braille
  • easy read
  • audio formats
  • translated information in other languages

Please contact us if you need information in a different format.

Interpreting and communication support

We can arrange communication support for appointments, treatment and hospital stays where needed.

This may include:

  • face-to-face interpreters
  • video interpreters
  • British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters
  • other communication professionals and support services

If you need an interpreter or communication support, please contact us before your appointment whenever possible. If you are already at the hospital, you can also speak to reception or the ward team.

Other support we can provide

Depending on your needs, we may also be able to offer:

  • communication by email or telephone
  • additional time during appointments
  • support with hearing aids or other communication equipment
  • reasonable adjustments to help you access our service

If you need further help

If you experience any difficulties accessing information, arranging communication support, or receiving the adjustments you need, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).

Our commitment to accessibility
