HSJ Awards double shortlisting

17 September 2018
CUH has been shortlisted in two categories at this year's prestigious national HSJ Awards; both of which recognise our achievements in providing high-quality patient care and improving patient safety through the use of digital technology.

Patient Safety category:
Using digital technology to improve sepsis care and save lives

Optimisation of Medications Management category:
eHospital - electronic medication and pharmacy optimisation

The patient safety shortlisting showcases our achievements of a 70% increase in patients receiving life-saving antibiotics within one hour of emergency department arrival, and a 50% increase across adult inpatient areas, thanks to automatic sepsis alerts and action prompts developed and built within our Epic electronic patient record.

"Improving prompt identification of sepsis patients and timely access to treatment is vital. The electronic alert and action set, devised with clinicians and built into Epic by our in-house eHospital team, better equips our doctors and nurses to be more aware of the possibility of sepsis and act quickly with appropriate treatment." Dr Sian Coggle, Consultant in Acute Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Sepsis Lead.

The optimisation of medications management shortlisting recognises CUH's use of Epic to assist with the prescribing and administration of medications to our patients. In addition, the development of our coded medication database - the most advanced coded medication database in any NHS Trust to date - now enables our clinicians to 'scan for safety' with barcode medication administration across inpatients, critical care and the emergency department.

"Built by the hospital's staff, Epic enables full electronic prescribing, dispensing and administration of medications for our patients, which continues to significantly improve patient care and safety. The time it takes to prepare discharge medications for patients has halved as Epic communicates directly with the hospital's pharmacy dispensing robot. We are also preventing at least 850 adverse medication reactions each year thanks to electronic allergy prescribing alerts in the system, and we have completely eliminated sedation-related prescribing errors in paediatrics." Dr Afzal Chaudhry, Renal Consultant and Chief Clinical Information Officer.

These shortlisted entries will now be presented to a panel of judges in October prior to the winners being announced at the HSJ Awards ceremony on 21 November.
