First ever pharmacy open day is prescription for success

05 July 2019
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which attracted hundreds of visitors to a recruitment day for would-be nurses, midwives and Healthcare Support Workers this month, is to hold its first ever pharmacy event tomorrow (Saturday 6 July).

The Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie maternity hospitals, is holding it between 10am and 2pm for qualified and non-qualified job hunters interested in working on a full-time, part-time or apprenticeship basis.Join the pharmacy team

With the Trust planning to build a children’s hospital on site to serve the East of England with a £100m Department of Health contribution, there will be more career opportunities of all kinds going forwards.

The pharmacy department has a frontline role to play ensuring the best use of medicines, and providing information about them to patients and staff. It employs more than 250 people and dispenses 372,000 items a year.

Open day visitors are asked to report to the Deakin Centre, in Richard Howe Way, adjacent to the main car park. There is no need to book.

There will be lots of interactive activities taking place, including a clinical trial involving chocolate, an insight into how medical leeches are stored, and the opportunity to speak to some of the staff.

Helping others in needVisitors will learn the different career pathways within pharmacy, the support given to more than 200 clinical trials, and how technology is used to check products and ensure patients get the best quality care.

The busy manufacturing unit prepares a wide range of sterile products and there will be a chance to ‘gown up’ and make some items, while learning how to avoid bacterial contamination.

Education and training principal pharmacist, Gill Shelton, said: “We have a great team here and there are some great opportunities. Our message is ‘come along and take a look, since you might just find exactly what you are looking for!’”
