I have a longstanding interest in perinatal brain injury. My research training was at University College London where I completed a PhD in the assessment of novel optical techniques to assess cerebral oxygenation in the newborn infant. I currently run the Cambridge Centre for Perinatal Neuroscience, which includes a dedicated newborn functional brain-imaging unit at the Rosie Hospital, the Evelyn Perinatal Imaging Centre. My research interests are in the development of technologies to identify sick infants at an early stage and in the development of novel imaging techniques to study brain function and development. I am also interested in the challenges of applying best research to improve clinical care for newborn infants and have recently led on a regional project developing a coordinated service for neuroprotection in the East of England.
