About the ward: 

During your stay on ward G5 you will encounter many different specialities of staff working at Addenbrooke's, including:

  • The nursing team: Senior Clinical Nurse, Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses, Junior Sisters/ Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Student Nurses
  • The medical team: Consultants, Registrars, Senior House officers
  • Allied health professionals: Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Pharmacists, Radiographers, Social Workers, Speech Therapists(links to own webpages on the site)
  • Ancillary staff: Ward Clerks, Ward Assistants, Domestics, Porters, Phlebotomists

On your arrival

On arrival to ward G5 you will be shown to your bed where you will be admitted by a member of the nursing team and a member of the medical team.  You will probably have routine blood samples taken soon after your arrival.  Plans will then be made for your care whilst you are in hospital.

Visiting patients on G5

Visiting on G5 is between 10:00 and 20:00, during this time there will be occasions where you may be asked to leave your relative including: 

Meal times: Inline with trust policy, ward G5 operates a protected meal times service where interventions from staff and relatives are kept to a minimum ensuring the patient is given adequate time to meet their nutritional requirements.  Meal times on ward G5 are protected between 12:00 and 13:00, and 17:00 and 18:00.

Rest period: Between 14:00 and 15:00 we turn off the lights and give the patients time to rest after their lunch.  During this time you may stay with your relative as long as you respect the patients on the ward.

  • Visiting outside the normal visiting hours must be arranged in advance with one of the senior nursing team.
  • Visitor numbers are restricted to 2 per bed space.
  • For infection control reasons children under 10 not allowed to visit the ward.

Infection control

For infection control reasons we do not allow fresh cut flowers on the ward.

Food and drink

  • Breakfast: 08:00
  • Lunch: 12:00
  • Dinner: 17:00

If you have any specific dietary requirements then please inform a member of the nursing team on admission.

A missed meal service is available. Please ask a member staff if you require this service.

Food and drink can be brought in for patients.  In certain circumstances we are able to re-heat food in a microwave, if you require this service you will need to sign a disclaimer.

There are a number of drink/snack rounds during the day.  If you require a drink/snack in between times please let a member of staff know.

Ward facilities

Each four bedded bay/side room has its own toilet and shower. These toilets are for patients only. Visitor’s toilets are located near the main lifts in the C&D block.

There is a day room for patients and relatives with television facilities. 

For friends and relatives wishing to send mail please address it to the ward and we will ensure it is passed on.

The Patient Line card vending machine is located outside the main C&D block lifts.  If your Patient Line isn’t working please follow the instructions on the screen.

Clothing and laundry

For infection control reasons we are unable to launder patient’s clothes and ask that relatives take responsibility for the laundering of patients clothes.

Do not feel that you have to wear pyjamas all the time. You are free to wear your day clothes.

Property

On admission to ward G5 you will be asked to sign a property form.  If you have any valuables that you would like us to keep hold of, please inform one of the nursing staff on your arrival to the ward.  Please try to keep property to a minimum whilst staying on G5.

Please call after 08:00 as the changeover of nursing staff will be complete by this time. 

To discuss care issues, please contact a member of the senior nursing team.

Drug rounds

Please try not to interrupt the nursing staff while they are administering medications.

Doctors Ward Rounds

Doctor’s rounds occur twice a day at 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays and at 12:00 on the weekend and bank holidays.

Please note that you may not see your consultant everyday.

Finding us: 

G5 is on the 5th floor of the F&G block adjacent to the main C&D block and can be accessed by the main lifts or stairs.
If you are likely to be in hospital for two weeks or more, your visitors can get a discounted car parking ticket from the main reception.
