Managing bowel leakage

Patient information A-Z

Planning ahead

Forward planning can make bowel accidents a little easier to cope with.

Some or all of these may be of use:

  • Have a small packet of wet wipes in your bag or packet as public toilets rarely have a wash basin in the cubicle.
  • An alternative is a small plastic squeezy bottle filled with warm water and taken into the toilet with you.
  • A couple of clothes pegs can be useful to keep clothes out of the way allowing you to use both hands to clean up or change a pad.
  • Small mirror to check you are clean.
  • Sanitary towel/ nappy disposable bags; useful for disposal or to carry soiled pants home. They are usually slightly scented.
  • Dark colours and patterned fabrics are less likely to show stains.
  • A small spray perfume or neutraliser, used sparingly, may help to disguise odour.
  • Carry your kit in a small wash bag (the sort airlines give free).
