Instructions for wearing splints

Applications / removal:

  • Only remove if advised to do so.
  • Lay your hand comfortably in the splint and do up the strap(s) securely.
  • To remove your splint you need to release just one side of the straps

Precautions

  • Heat of any kind can change the shape of your splint. This includes strong sunlight, dry heat (for example from a radiator), steam or direct flame.
  • Do not operate machinery including driving while wearing your splint unless advised to do so.

Cleaning instructions

(Unless advised not to) You can clean your splint inside and outside using a cool damp cloth and mild soap. Towel dry your splint before replacing it.

Maintenance of your splint

Please do not modify your splint. If your splint needs repairing or parts replaced, please contact the department.

You should call your therapist if

  • You notice any redness, rubbing or blisters from wearing the splint
  • Your pain increases when wearing the splint
  • The splint becomes damaged, broken or lost.
