This test investigates the size of people’s lungs and involves sitting in a clear cubicle and breathing through a mouthpiece.

After a few normal breaths we will block off the mouthpiece and ask you to try and breathe quicker (like panting) in and out against the block. We are trying to measure the small pressure change you are making during this time.

After two seconds the block will release and we will ask you to take as big a breath in as you can and then breathe out as far as you can. The tricky bit about this part of the test is that as people breathe out to empty they get to a point where they feel there is no more air and they would like to take a breath in. We can see on our computer screen, however, that there is still some more air that can be blown out. The reason you feel empty is that the last little bit of air is coming out so slowly you can’t feel it. We usually tell people that when they get to the point where they feel empty just squeeze for another couple of seconds and all the air will come out.

This test and all the other tests are performed more than once so that we are sure we have the right results.
