Dr Fiona Cooke

Consultant Medical Microbiologist

I work as a consultant in the PHE Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory at Addenbrookes. This position is less-than-full-time, as I have recently been appointed as a SubDean at the clinical school, with responsibility for welfare.

My current role

  • I am the lead for training and teaching in the department. I am also the Regional Training Programme Director for Microbiology in the East of England.
  • I am the lead examiner for microbiology for the Royal College of Pathologists Part I examination and the Combined Infection Certificate Examination.

Previous history

I trained in medicine in Cambridge and Oxford, then worked in various London hospitals in general medical specialties. My PhD was on bacterial genomics, focussing on antibiotic resistance genes within Salmonella Typhimurium and I was based between Imperial College, PHE Colindale and the Sanger Institute.

Membership/accreditations

  • I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.
  • I am the Dean of Discipline, College Lecturer and Official Fellow at Girton College.

Personal interests

I enjoy public engagement activities, and am involved with Cambridge Science Festival. I am also the medical representative on the Cambridge University Expeditions Committee.
