The department of paediatric surgery and urology offers specialist treatment for infants, children and adolescents who may require an operation for a general surgical or urological condition.
Your child's appointment
To make your child’s clinic appointment as productive as possible please keep the following in mind:
- Please arrive 10 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment. The clinic has a waiting area with toys, games and a play specialist; to help keep your child entertained while you wait.
- Allow plenty of time for parking and locating the clinic if you are unfamiliar with its location.
- If your child is attending a urology clinic please try to ensure that your child arrives with a full bladder (where old enough) as a urine test is often needed.
Non-urgent advice: Unable to attend?
If you are unable to attend, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible. Please call the number on your appointment letter so that we can give your appointment to another patient waiting to come to clinic.

Referrals
For a new outpatient appointment, a child's GP must request an initial appointment via e-Referral Service. A child’s local paediatrician, and other professionals who do not have access to e-Referral Service, can arrange an initial appointment by sending a letter via post or email.

Urgent referrals
Urgent referrals can be discussed by contacting the on-call surgical team via Addenbrooke’s switchboard on 01223 245151 / 01223 805000. We schedule children according to their clinical need.
About us
This regional service, established in 1995, receives referrals from units throughout East Anglia and neighbouring counties. It provides services for children's general surgery, paediatric urology, gastrointestinal, thoracic, oncological and neonatal surgery.
Our team of consultant surgeons, junior doctors and specialist nurses investigate and treat children with simple and complex general surgery and urological disorders. We see over 3000 children a year in specialist clinics, and carry out over 1700 operations a year on children from very premature infants to young people up to 16 years of age.
We offer a number of joint multi-disciplinary clinics, with other colleagues including paediatric gastroenterologists, paediatric respiratory physicians, paediatric endocrinologists, dieticians and speech therapists, to see and treat patients with very complex gastrointestinal, respiratory and genital (disorders of sexual differentiation) conditions.
Our department has the highest reputation for clinical excellence and has pioneered ‘key hole’ surgical methods (laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery), in the East of England. We seek to develop links with other paediatric units and providers in the region, in order to provide the best possible quality of care to the children of the East of England. We are also actively involved in the training and education of doctors and surgeons of the future.
