Tracy Brooke – ward clerk

Tracy Brooke is retiring after joining in November 1992, so is in her 29th year at CUH.

CUH is an amazing place and we need to remember how lucky we are to have it; they truly do wonderful things and occasionally perform miracles.

I joined as a ward clerk all those years ago and still remain a ward clerk. Once I started in this role I realised that the job ‘fitted me like a glove’. I absolutely love working as a member of the team with the nurses, doctors, patients, relatives and all the other departments who visit the ward. Working on ward D10 has always been like being part of a family, not just a team.

I have trained many ward clerks over the years; you can learn as much from them as they can learn from you. I always train them to have a smile in their voice when they answer the telephone, as it starts the conversation off on the right foot.

I am Cambridge born and bred, so love this part of the country and I love CUH. I had my tonsils out in old Addenbrooke’s when I was five, so my relationship with CUH started a very long time ago. CUH has been absolutely brilliant during the pandemic and we have all realised that we are capable of a lot more than we thought. We have been there for each other more than ever and have worked with teams we have never worked with before, thereby creating happier networking for the future.

I wouldn’t have remained in the same role for all these years if CUH didn’t make me happy.

Obviously since I started here all those years ago, CUH has increased in size, so the hospital has changed in many ways. It’s still a wonderful place to work, you make many new friends, you learn to work as a team and help and support each other.

We should all be very proud to work here and grateful for this wonderful place that cares and nurtures us, and helps us to blossom and grow.
