Angela Coupe – deputy head of nursing, division C

Our long service awards are an opportunity for us to thank our longest service staff and shine a spotlight on their memories of working at CUH for 20, 30 and 40 years. We wanted to share some of their stories with you. Angela Coupe is celebrating 30 years at CUH.

I am so proud to work here and admire the dedication of all of our staff who strive to be the best and work tirelessly to deliver kind, safe and excellent care.

I joined CUH as a junior staff nurse and took up roles in research as well as senior sister posts in hepatology, the medical assessment unit and the emergency department. Having been a matron for a number of years in division C, I took up a secondment for 1½ years as head of nursing. I love the friendliness and camaraderie you get working with all staff across the Trust.

I have had the privilege of recruiting nurses from other countries, gaining life experience in getting to understand other cultures and to help support our nurses when they start work at CUH.

Nursing in general over the last three years has changed dramatically under our chief nurse leadership. This direction has created an exciting and inspiring vision which places an emphasis on developing new roles, supporting existing ones and creates opportunities to really engage with our patients and teams in a positive way.

It goes without saying that the size of Addenbrooke’s hospital and the addition of the biomedical campus has made it unrecognisable from when I joined. I remember my first year working on a neuro critical care area which was a four-bedded annex on a ward with ventilated patients. This is now a large and modern critical care area, able to take many complex patients from all over the country.

Having attended many national conferences and workshops, I am always proud to see that we are a progressive hospital that is often more advanced than other acute trusts and this brings with it an enormous sense of pride working here.
