What to expect on surgery day
We run 2–3 specialist surgical lists each month for children with Stickler Syndrome.
The timing arrangements may vary depending on which list your child is scheduled for.
This leaflet provides important information about what to expect on the day of your child’s surgery and the following appointments. Please read it carefully and keep it handy for reference.
On the day of surgery
Arrival instructions
- Time: Please arrive at Ward F3. Ward staff will specify the time of arrival.
- Location: Enter through the main hospital entrance and follow the signs to the F wards, located on Level 3.
- Parking: The closest car park is Car Park 1.
What will happen next?
- Your child will receive dilating eye drops in preparation for surgery on the ward.
- A paediatric anaesthetist will assess your child to ensure they are fit for anaesthesia.
Consultation and consent
At around 12:30pm, you will meet with a member of the ophthalmology surgical team to:
- Discuss the planned procedure.
- Complete the surgical consent form.
- Have the opportunity to ask any questions or express concerns.
The consultation may take place either in the Cambridge Eye Unit and Cataract Clinic (Level 1) or on Ward F3. This will depend on the preferences and working arrangements of the surgical team that day. You will be informed where to go by the ward staff once you arrive.
After the surgery
Post-operative review (next day)
- Your child may need to return for a post-operative check the day after surgery (to be confirmed by the Consultant on the day).
- The post-operative check is usually held in Clinic 14, located opposite the Cambridge Eye Unit (CEU).
- The purpose is to ensure the surgery went well and confirm your child is safe to travel home.
Follow-up appointment
· A further review will be arranged in 2–3 weeks to monitor healing and assess progress. If this appointment has not been booked after a week, please do email the Stickler Service Team or call 01223 348842.
If you have any questions before the surgery, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help make this experience as smooth and reassuring as possible for both you and your child.
