Medicine information
Dos and don’ts
Do not discontinue any medication prescribed by Cambridge IVF without discussing it with us. This is even if you experience bleeding before the date of your pregnancy test.
Do perform a urine pregnancy test on the first morning sample of urine on the date advised even if you experience bleeding before or on the date of your pregnancy test.
Do contact the unit if you experience any of the following:
- Heavy bleeding
- Raised temperature or feeling unwell
- Pain in your tummy not relieved by Paracetamol or Codeine (if you are safe to take these medications)
What happens next?
Please contact us to update us with your pregnancy test result.
If your pregnancy test is positive, we will arrange an early pregnancy ultrasound scan. This will be performed at around 7 weeks of pregnancy (approximately 3 weeks after your pregnancy test) at Cambridge IVF. If you have been started on any medication, this will need to continue until 7 weeks following a fresh embryo transfer and 12 weeks following a frozen embryo transfer or donor egg cycle.
If you have a positive pregnancy test and lower abdominal pain or bleeding please contact us immediately (see below for contact details). In such circumstances you may need to be seen urgently on the Early Pregnancy Unit (Clinic 24) at the Rosie Hospital to assess you for any complications.
If, sadly, your pregnancy test result is negative, it is still important to inform us (either by phone or nursing email). We can arrange a review appointment with a doctor or nurse to discuss further treatment plans, as appropriate.
Please remember that the services of our specialist fertility counsellors are available as per your treatment package. You can ask us to make you an appointment for counselling or you can do so yourself, by contacting the counsellors as follows:
