Nipple areola prosthesis

Patient information A-Z

A patient guide for care and maintenance of your prosthesis

Your nipple prosthesis has been custom made with a self-adhesive or tacky gel fitting surface so it is self-retentive. Care and maintenance of the device and the skin are essential to ensure prolonged life of the prosthesis, and the health of the supporting tissue.

Skin care

Check the skin on a daily basis and do not apply the prosthesis if the skin is broken, overly dry or inflamed; seek medical advice to rectify this problem before attaching the prosthesis.

Ensure skin is clean and dry prior to attaching the prosthesis. Do not use any moisturisers or creams on the area where the prosthesis will be positioned as this may affect the adhesive properties of the tacky gel.

Attaching the prosthesis

Many patients find positioning the prosthesis easier when in front of a mirror. Holding the prosthesis in one hand, attach one edge to the breast and apply from that point through the whole prosthesis. You may find that removing an area to pull the skin taught under the prosthesis will remove any tightness. The tacky gel is designed to last for some time so if not correct, simply remove and re-attach. Issues of application vary from patient to patient so we advise practice attaching the prosthesis until you find whatever you are comfortable with.

To remove the prosthesis, carefully peel away one edge with your fingers and gently peel away from the breast.

Cleaning and storing the prosthesis

Your prosthesis should be cleaned with warm water and a mild non-perfumed soap solution. Use your fingers or non-abrasive cloth to wipe the prosthesis. Take care around the edges of the prosthesis as they are thin and can tear easily. Once cleaned, gently pat the prosthesis dry with a tissue.

The prosthesis should be stored in a clean, dry container with the tacky gel attached to a piece of flexible plastic so dust cannot adhere to the adhesive side. Place the prosthesis front side down to prevent the edges from curling and damage.

Can I exercise/swim with the prosthesis?

Nipple prosthesis can be worn while exercising and swimming. We advise a tight-fitting sports bra or swimsuit to ensure the device is kept secure in place during activity.

Further information

Your device should last 12 to 18 months and you will be reviewed every 6 to 12 months to review the prosthesis, and manufacture a new one where needed. If your device is damaged in any way, contact the maxillofacial laboratory on 01223 596037 to arrange a review appointment.
