Implant retained facial prosthesis

Patient information A-Z

A patient guide for care and maintenance of an orbital prosthesis

Your implant retained orbital prosthesis has been custom made specifically for you and with careful maintenance and cleaning, should last you 12-18 months. This is because the colours in the silicone fade with UV rays and the natural oils in skin. You will have 6 month review appointments with your Maxillofacial Prosthetist (MfP), so when a new one is required, arrangements will be made to facilitate this. The importance of maintaining good tissue and prosthesis hygiene is imperative to ensure the fitting and life of your device.

How to apply your prosthesis

Your MfP will give you full instructions on the adaption and removal of your prosthesis. Ensure your skin is clean and dry prior to applying your prosthesis to avoid bacterial build up. Implant retained prosthesis will have a single position so when placing the prosthesis close to the area, the magnetic forces will aid location for you. Clip-retained devices will require pressure until a gentle click can be heard. You may find the fine edges can be blended into the surrounding tissue by applying a small amount of petroleum jelly.

How long can I wear my prosthesis?

You can wear your prosthesis all day. We do recommend removing it for some time so your skin can ‘breathe’. For most patients, this is when they are home in the evening. The prosthesis should not be worn in bed.

Can I exercise while wearing my prosthesis?

For gentle exercise, you can wear your prosthesis. We recommend washing it soon after to avoid bacterial build-up (see below). We advise against wearing your prosthesis for contact sports such as rugby.

How to clean and store your prosthesis

Once a day, use the provided soft children’s toothbrush, lukewarm water and a mild liquid soap to clean the side of the prosthesis that sits against your skin. Gently scrub the magnets with the brush and soap lather.

On the outside of the prosthesis, use your fingers and a small amount of soap lather to gently wipe the surface under cold or lukewarm water; never use hot water. Gently dry the prosthesis with a cloth.

Take great care around the edges of the prosthesis; these areas are generally very thin and can easily tear.

Store your prosthesis in a clean, dry container. Place on tissues with the front side down to prevent the edges from curling and damage.

Further information

If you feel your prosthesis requires alteration, contact the Maxillofacial Laboratory and arrange an appointment. Do not attempt to modify your prosthesis.

You will have been supplied with a leaflet on how to maintain your implants and the skin around them.

If your prosthesis is damaged, please contact the Maxillofacial Laboratory on 01223 596037 to arrange a review appointment.
