A patient guide for care and maintenance of your prosthesis
Your trial sleeve prosthesis has been manufactured especially for the purpose of checking the vacuum fit of your future complete digit prosthesis
How to apply your prosthesis
Your prosthesis is held in position by the creation of a passive vacuum. It is important that you create this vacuum correctly.
Ensure your residual digit is clean, dry and free from creams or moisturiser as these will affect the fit and adhesion. Carefully slide the prosthesis into position, taking care to allow the thin edges to position correctly. Do not pull on these edges as they will tear. Push slightly to remove any air from beneath the silicone. You should now have good retention.
If you feel painful pressure or numbness in the area, the sleeve is too tight. Remove the prosthesis and re-apply. If this continues, contact your maxillofacial prosthetist as you will require a modified sleeve.
How to remove your prosthesis
To remove your prosthesis, twist the prosthesis to break the vacuum and pull it away from your skin. Do not pull on the fine edges as they will tear.
Cleaning your prosthesis
To clean your prosthesis, use your fingers and a small amount of soap lather to gently wipe the surface under cold or lukewarm water; never use hot water. Gently dry the prosthesis with a cloth.
Can I exercise while wearing my prosthesis?
For gentle exercise, you can wear your prosthesis. We recommend washing it soon after to avoid bacterial build-up (see above).
