A patient guide for care and maintenance of the ocular component of an orbital prosthesis.
This guide will help you in the removal, cleaning and re-insertion of the ocular component of your orbital prosthesis.
How to remove the eye
Your Maxillofacial Prosthetist (MfP) will demonstrate how to remove the eye component as part of your fitting appointment. We advise working in a safe place such as a table where the eye will not be lost. Place a towel down to offer a soft working surface. Pull open the lids of the prosthesis by opening the eye up using your thumbs, and using an index finger, push upwards on the underside of the eye and it should come out of its socket. If this does not work, levering a blunt instrument under the eye should facilitate removal. Take care not to flex the prosthesis too much as this may cause the silicone at the corners of the eye to tear.
How do I clean the eye?
The eye is made from coloured and clear acrylic which encapsulates the custom-painted iris disc. This can be cleaned using lukewarm water and mild liquid soap. Rinse the eye in clean water and gently dry with a tissue. The silicone socket is cleaned in the same manner as the rest of the prosthesis (outlined in the other leaflet you will be given). Take great care to ensure the socket is clean, rinsed, and free from liquid before inserting the eye. A cotton bud is ideal for cleaning and drying this area.
How do I re-insert the eye?
Gently flex the prosthesis to open the upper and lower lids. Position the nose end of the eye with the nose end of the prosthesis. Gently slide this end of the eye into the prosthesis, taking care not to interfere with the eyelashes. Once in place, press the eye to ensure a snug fit.
Further information
If you feel your prosthesis requires alteration, contact the Maxillofacial Laboratory and arrange an appointment. Do not attempt to modify your prosthesis.
While your prosthesis should be cleaned daily, the eye does not require removal on a daily basis.
