Meet the team

Caring for babies in the NICU takes a whole team. From specialist nurses and consultants to therapists and support staff, each person plays a part in looking after your baby and supporting you during your stay.

Medical Staff

Neonatal consultants

These are the most senior doctors on the neonatal unit and will oversee all of your baby’s care. They change on a weekly and weekend basis.

The consultant or registrar will aim to update you during the ward round, or will provide you with a thorough update on a weekly basis.

Resident Doctors

Resident Doctors are qualified doctors with a minimum of three years’ experience. They work closely with the consultants in delivering day-to-day care for your baby.

Advanced Neonatal Nursing Practitioner

Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) are highly trained nurses with specialist qualifications in neonatal care. They work closely with the doctors to assess, treat and support your baby throughout their stay.

You may see an ANNP leading parts of your baby’s care, performing procedures or speaking with you during ward rounds.

Nursing Staff

Matron and Clinical Lead Nurses

The matron and clinical lead nurses are responsible for the overall running of the unit and supporting the nursing team. They are experienced, qualified nurses with additional training in neonatal intensive care.

They help to make sure care is safe, consistent and tailored to each baby and family. You may see them on the unit checking in with families and staff.

Senior Sister (Manger of the Day, MoTD, or Nurse in Charge, NIC)

Senior Sisters act as the Nurse in Charge (NIC) or Manager of the Day (MOTD), taking responsibility for the day-to-day coordination of the unit. They are experienced neonatal nurses who oversee the nursing team and ensure the unit runs smoothly.

They help manage staffing, support families and make sure care is delivered safely and efficiently throughout each shift.

Junior Sister

Junior Sisters are experienced neonatal nurses who care for babies across the unit. They hold a specialist neonatal qualification and may take charge of the unit when needed.

They support families, mentor junior staff and help ensure care is delivered to a high standard.

Senior Staff Nurse

Senior Staff Nurses are qualified nurses who have either completed or are working towards a neonatal intensive care qualification.

They provide direct care to babies and support the wider nursing team, helping to maintain consistent and compassionate care.

Staff Nurse

Staff Nurses are qualified nurses who are working on the neonatal unit while they prepare to complete their specialist neonatal training.

They provide hands-on care and work closely with more senior colleagues to build their knowledge and skills.

Nursery Nurse

Nursery Nurses are trained in special care and support babies who do not need intensive or high dependency care.

They focus on feeding, comfort and developmental care, and may also work in the milk bank preparing feeds for the unit.

Neonatal Assistant

Neonatal Assistants help keep the unit running smoothly by making sure equipment and supplies are well stocked.

They support the clinical team behind the scenes so that staff can focus on caring for babies and families.
