Children’s Sleep Service

We run one clinic a week and see children with suspected sleep disordered breathing such as obstructive sleep apnoea or central sleep apnoea.

In this clinic your child will be seen by a paediatric respiratory consultant or a member of the team. During the appointment you may be offered further investigations such as a home based oximetry study or an inpatient sleep study, where your child stays one night in hospital and various sleep observations are recorded via a sleep study machine while they are asleep. We do a number of different types of sleep studies in children, both in hospital and at home. Please see our information videos below about coming to hospital for a sleep study or how to use the equipment you have been given for a study at home.

Video transcript: Somno Sleep Study

00:00:10,480 --> 00:00:11,800

Hello and welcome to the

00:00:11,800 --> 00:00:14,560

Somno touch home sleep

study instruction video.

00:00:15,320 --> 00:00:17,560

You will receive two

separate blue bags,

00:00:17,560 --> 00:00:20,120

one small and one slightly bigger.

00:00:21,720 --> 00:00:24,040

Included in the smaller bag is a small

00:00:24,040 --> 00:00:28,240

Somno touch recorder, which records

all aspects of the sleep study,

00:00:28,560 --> 00:00:32,200

and the blue measurement adapter

for the chest and abdominal bands.

00:00:33,200 --> 00:00:36,200

You will notice that there

are some disposable items.

00:00:36,680 --> 00:00:38,960

The SpO2 for the finger.

00:00:40,720 --> 00:00:42,600

The elastic measurement band

00:00:42,600 --> 00:00:44,480

and the nasal cannula.

00:00:49,920 --> 00:00:52,320

The other bag contains

the video camera,

00:00:52,320 --> 00:00:55,720

a tripod and a cable to connect

it to the power socket.

00:00:57,520 --> 00:00:59,320

Firstly, carefully attach a

00:00:59,320 --> 00:01:01,760

tripod to the base of the camera.

00:01:02,520 --> 00:01:06,960

Find a suitable position in the bedroom

to place the video camera, preferably

00:01:06,960 --> 00:01:10,800

close enough to see your child's head

and face, but also the body.

00:01:20,560 --> 00:01:22,800

Connect the camera to a power socket.

00:01:22,800 --> 00:01:25,400

Use an extension lead if necessary.

00:01:29,960 --> 00:01:32,280

Check to make sure the

little light located

00:01:32,280 --> 00:01:34,440

at the back of the camera turns on.

00:01:35,080 --> 00:01:37,040

When the recording time begins.

00:01:37,040 --> 00:01:40,600

You should see lights illuminate

on the front of the camera, indicating

00:01:40,600 --> 00:01:42,640

the start of the recording.

00:01:44,160 --> 00:01:46,120

Now lay out the bands.

00:01:46,840 --> 00:01:49,840

You will find two sets

of disposable bands,

00:01:50,160 --> 00:01:53,160

either small and medium

or medium and large.

00:01:53,880 --> 00:01:56,640

It is essential that the bands fit snugly.

00:01:57,760 --> 00:01:59,800

Attach one end of the band poppers

00:01:59,800 --> 00:02:02,400

to the blue measurement adapter.

00:02:04,360 --> 00:02:07,360

Thread the Somno touch to the chest band.

00:02:14,920 --> 00:02:17,240

Position the band on the upper chest,

00:02:17,240 --> 00:02:20,120

ideally over a vest for maximum comfort,

00:02:20,120 --> 00:02:22,040

then popper shut the band.

00:02:29,120 --> 00:02:32,520

Attach a lower band at the level of

the belly button and pop up.

00:02:35,040 --> 00:02:37,400

Now adjust both bands to fit,

00:02:37,400 --> 00:02:40,800

so that they feel secure,

but not too uncomfortably tight.

00:02:42,640 --> 00:02:46,480

Ideally, make these adjustments

whilst your child is standing up

00:02:46,480 --> 00:02:50,400

or laying down flat,

not whilst the child is sitting.

00:02:50,960 --> 00:02:53,640

They will be slack when laying down.

00:02:54,480 --> 00:02:56,880

Never attach a band

straight over the skin.

00:02:56,880 --> 00:03:00,360

The child needs to wear

a preferably tight top or pajama.

00:03:02,760 --> 00:03:05,760

Thread the cable under

the pajamas to the adapter.

00:03:06,680 --> 00:03:09,840

Plug the blue measurement

adapter to the some touch.

00:03:11,080 --> 00:03:12,920

It is really important that the blue

00:03:12,920 --> 00:03:15,920

on/off buttons on the right hand side.

00:03:16,320 --> 00:03:20,160

Otherwise, this can easily be

put on upside down by mistake.

00:03:21,800 --> 00:03:23,080

Nasal prongs.

00:03:24,040 --> 00:03:27,040

These measure the breathing

and snoring from the nose.

00:03:27,600 --> 00:03:30,800

The prongs need to be positioned

at the base of the nostrils,

00:03:30,800 --> 00:03:34,320

with the tubing draped over the ears

and secured under the chin.

00:03:34,960 --> 00:03:38,200

Place some tape across the

tubing on the cheeks to secure.

00:03:39,960 --> 00:03:42,320

Thread the tubing under

the pajamas and twist

00:03:42,320 --> 00:03:45,320

into the bottom of the

Somno touch control panel.

00:03:52,720 --> 00:03:55,400

If your child feels the

prongs are uncomfortable,

00:03:55,400 --> 00:03:58,240

you can remove them

and try to reapply them

00:03:58,240 --> 00:04:00,480

after your child goes to sleep.

00:04:00,480 --> 00:04:02,400

Attempt that 2 or 3 times

00:04:02,400 --> 00:04:07,360

and if your child still cannot settle,

it is okay to not use the nasal prongs.

00:04:11,520 --> 00:04:15,800

The SpO2 attachment measures

the oxygen in the blood and the heart rate.

00:04:16,400 --> 00:04:19,800

Attache this to one of your child's

fingers and feed the cable up

00:04:19,800 --> 00:04:21,120

through the sleeve.

00:04:45,040 --> 00:04:48,040

Plug the SpO2 into the Somno Touch.

00:04:49,320 --> 00:04:51,440

The setting up process is now complete.
