Spirometry assesses not only how much air you can blow out but also how fast you can blast the air into the machine. We will ask you to breathe through a mouthpiece, normally first and then ask you to take as big a breath in as you can. When we see that you are full we will ask you to blast the air out as far as you can as quick as you can. It is important that the initial blast is as sharp as possible. Once you are empty we will ask you to breathe back in as fast and as full as possible. This test normally takes between 10-20 minutes to complete.

You may also be asked to perform spirometry before and 20-40 minutes after taking an inhaler. This is to assess whether the inhaler allows you to blow the air out any quicker. This will add up to 40 minutes to the tests.
