In 2022 artist Kirsten Lavers received surgery for breast cancer at CUH. During her recovery, she created this series of drawings, 'Tomorrow Is Another Day'.
16 February - June 2026
The Addenbrooke's Gallery, L2
The exhibition showcases the thirty artworks Kirsten made during her recovery from surgery. The drawings have been created with fluids and inks used in surgery for cleaning and marking the skin (Prevase Stain, Methylene Blue, Chlorhexidine and Videne Surgical Scrub). These are not traditional art materials which means that the drawings, like Kirsten’s scars, are softening, fading and altering with the passing of time.
A lunar month is approximately 29.5 days, and whether rising moons or setting suns, the intention is that this series of 30 drawings reference the passage of time. Each individual work is titled with the date it was photographed on completion. These aren’t consecutive, it took Kirsten 15 months to complete the series, but together they speak of the reality of recovery. The artworks explore healing as a daily practice, regardless of outcome.
Tomorrow Is Another Day fits into Kirsten’s wider practice of meditative ‘conceptual drawing’ which she has been exploring since 2010. Each drawing begins with the perimeter line of a perfect circle and evolves from repeated attempts to perfectly copy the preceding line. Her mistakes create the drawing’s fascinating shapes, reminiscent of fingerprints and tree rings.
