General medicine - G2

Wards A-Z

G2 is a 13-bed ward within general medicine, offering specialised care for patients who need cardiac monitoring. Ten of the beds are fitted with cardiac telemetry systems that enable continuous tracking of heart activity.

During your stay on ward G2 you will encounter different specialities of staff working at Addenbrooke's Hospital, including:

  • the nursing team - senior clinical nurse, senior sisters / charge nurses, junior sisters / charge nurses, staff nurses, health care assistants and student nurses
  • the medical team - consultants, registrars, senior house officers
  • allied health professionals - physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, radiographers, social workers, speech therapists
  • ancillary staff - ward clerks, ward assistants, domestics, porters, phlebotomists.

On your arrival

On arrival at ward G2 you will be shown to your bed where you will be admitted by a member of the nursing team and a member of the medical team. You will probably have routine blood samples taken soon after your arrival. Plans will then be made for your care while you are in hospital.

Visiting patients on G2

Visiting hours on ward G2 are between 8 am and 8 pm. During this time, there may be occasions when you are asked to leave the ward, for example during protected meal times.

In line with Trust policy, ward G2 operates a protected meal times service when interventions from staff and visitors are kept to a minimum, ensuring the patient is given adequate time to meet their nutritional requirements.

Meal times on ward G2 are protected from midday to 1 pm, and 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Visiting outside normal visiting hours must be arranged in advance with one of the senior nursing team. Visitor numbers are restricted to two per patient. For infection control reasons, children under 10 not allowed to visit the ward.

If you are likely to be in hospital for two weeks or more, your visitors can obtain a discounted car parking ticket from the main reception.

Infection control

Ward G2 undertakes many initiatives to prevent the spread of infection. Please visit our infection control page for more information and advice on how you can help stop the spread of infection while visiting Addenbrooke's Hospital.

For infection control reasons, we do not allow fresh-cut flowers or any plants on the ward.

Food and drink

  • Breakfast: 8 am
  • Lunch: midday
  • Dinner: 5 pm

If you have any dietary requirements, please inform a member of the nursing team on admission.

A missed meal service is available. Please ask a staff member if you require this service.

Food and drink can be brought in for patients. There is a patients' fridge available to use. Any unlabelled or out-of-date food will be removed.

In certain circumstances we are able to re-heat food in a microwave. You will need to sign a disclaimer if you require this service.

There are a number of drink / snack rounds during the day. If you require a drink / snack in between these times, please inform a staff member.

Ward facilities

Ward G2 is made up of two side rooms and two open bays, providing accommodation for both male and female patients.

Each unit within ward G2 is equipped with a bedside television, call buzzer, and personal lighting.

The Patient Line card vending machine is in the main concourse, but TV and phone packages can be purchased on the set. Please follow the instructions on the screen if your Patient Line isn’t working.

Clothing and laundry

For infection control reasons, we are unable to launder patients' clothes and ask that relatives take responsibility for the laundering of patients' clothes.

Do not feel that you have to wear pyjamas all the time. You are free to wear your day clothes and move around the ward as you are able to.

The team will encourage you to 'get up, get dressed and get active' so that you can get back to your normal routine as soon as possible.

Property

On admission to ward G2, you will be asked to sign a property form. If you have any valuables that you would like us to keep hold of, please inform one of the nursing staff on arrival on the ward.

Please try to keep property to a minimum while staying on the ward.

Doctor's ward / drug rounds

Please try not to interrupt the nursing staff while they are administering medications.

Doctor’s rounds occur twice a day in the morning and afternoon on weekdays and at about midday on weekends and bank holidays.

Please note that you may not see your consultant every day.

Please call after 9 am as the changeover of nursing staff will be complete by this time.
