What is the thrombosis treatment team?

A team of specialist nurses who provide a fast track deep vein thrombosis (DVT) assessment service. They also run a daily clinic to facilitate the early discharge of patients with DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE) for anticoagulant treatment.

We receive direct GP referrals of patients with suspected DVT and undertake assessment and investigations to exclude or confirm the diagnosis. We provide information and advice to patients with a confirmed DVT or PE, facilitate their discharge and initiate anticoagulant treatment in a nurse led outpatient clinic. We are a hospital-based education resource for patients, staff and primary care services.

When is the thrombosis treatment team available?

DVT assessment : Monday-Friday

DVT & PE treatment : 7 day service (morning clinics at weekends and bank holidays)

Out-of-hours: DVT patients are assessed in the Emergency Department (ED).

Referrals:

Patients who are worried about leg symptoms should first seek advice from their GP, who can refer them directly to the thrombosis treatment team for DVT assessment.

If you are unable to see your GP for any reason you can go to your nearest emergency department.
