How long have you worked at CUH?

I have been working at CUH for 18 months.

What part of your work are you particularly proud of or find rewarding?

Using my range of surgical skills to not only remove cancers but to do so in a way that restores form and function whilst respecting oncological principles.

Also working collaboratively with such a wide range of passionate, supportive, and knowledgeable members of the breast multidisciplinary team.

How does your team make a difference for patients or families?

My job is a lot less effective without the wider collaborative team. Every day we have difficult challenging conversations and the team work very hard to support patients in what is arguably one of the most devastating times of their lives.

What is something you’d like people to understand about your role?

We are getting very good at treating breast cancers with patients living many, many years beyond their diagnosis. Surgeons (both breast and plastics) have developed a wide range of surgical techniques that not only remove the cancers effectively but leave patients with good cosmetic outcomes which we hope helps them to recover not just physically but mentally and emotionally from their breast cancer diagnosis.

What’s one thing you enjoy outside of work?

I do a lot of breast health awareness events, mentoring of young aspiring surgeons, research and I am also a trustee at Breast Cancer Now (one of the largest breast cancer charities in the country). Being able to connect with others who have similar passions and aspirations is not just motivating and inspiring but oftentimes humbling.
