Leave the World better than you found it.

My current role

My specialist interest is Oesophago-gastric surgery including minimally invasive cancer surgery.

I am one of the Emergency General Surgeons with an interest in training, both residents and Advanced Nursing roles, and developing the emergency surgery pathways to optimise care.

I was appointed in 2015 as the first of the combined specialist Upper Gastro-intestinal/ Emergency General Surgery Consultants.

I perform both minimally invasive and open surgery. My specialist practice is in benign and cancer care and surgery to the upper GI tract. This includes Oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery, anti-reflux, achalasia and gallbladder surgery - open and minimally invasively. I also perform open and laparoscopic abdominal wall hernia surgery.

My endoscopic practice includes diagnostic and intervention scoping (ENDOvac therapy, feeding tube, dilatation and botox)

As an EGS consultant I deliver additional emergency surgical and trauma surgery care on top of a full on-call surgical commitment.

Leadership

As the first UGI/EGS consultant, I took on the clinical lead for EGS.

As lead, I worked to develop first the Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit, then the GUTS urgent operating list and finally the full Surgical Assessment Unit currently on D6 ward.

The SAU caters to a wide range of specialist surgical teams in addition to the GI surgical team. I remain a member of the SAU review and development committee.

I am part of the development team for the Advanced Care Practioner role and business case for the SAU and mentor the current trainees in this advanced nursing role.

I have been the Specialty Lead for the Cambridge Oesophago-gastric Unit, helping develop Minimally Invasive cancer surgery, the Pre-habilitation service to improve surgical outcomes and the Post Surgery Longterm GI symptoms assessment and treatment programme now delivered by our UGI specialist nursing team.

Teaching and training

I have undertaken CS and AES roles, including in the Improving Surgical Training (IST) pilot for four years. I continue to teach on national (CCrISP, Core surgical) and local (Trauma cadaveric, core cadaveric) course and regularly in clinic, wards and theatres to pre and post graduates.

I was the supervising Consultant Surgeon for the first Cambridge University Surgical Society National Championship in Feb 2025.
