Dr Richard Hodder

Patient Governor

My current role

Since July 2025, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Patient Governor for a three-year term.

Drawing on over a decade of experience as both a patient and volunteer at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH), I am passionate about ensuring that the hospital's culture of care, kindness, respect and dignity remains central to its mission.

As a former and current Governor, my focus is consistently on enhancing patient care and supporting staff across both clinical and non-clinical roles.

I am also the Deputy Chair of the Clinical Policies Forum at the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Integrated Care System (ICS).

Previous history

My career in clinical medicine encompassed hospitals, the Royal Air Force, research and general practice.

After retirement, I became a patient at Addenbrooke’s and later underwent a pulmonary endarterectomy at Royal Papworth Hospital. This experience motivated me to volunteer and to be an advocate for patients at both hospitals, helping to connect patient experiences with the delivery of healthcare services in meaningful ways.

I served for nine years as a Governor at Royal Papworth Hospital, including four years as Lead Governor. During this time, I chaired and sat on several important committees, took part in ward rounds and attended Board meetings to ensure the patient voice was heard.

Personal interests

Garden maintenance, aviation, travel and spending time with family.
