Dr Kamal Patel

Consultant in acute medicine and intensive care

I am a consultant in acute and intensive care medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

My current role

As well as being a consultant in acute and intensive care medicine at CUH, I have an interest in teaching and take on various roles within the Trust and outside as RCP examiner, training programme director for the ACCS –acute internal medicine programme and ultrasound training.

I enjoy the challenges the leadership role provides and am eager to take on new tasks and improvement projects which will continue to reshape AIM and patient care at CUH.

Previous history

After completing medical school in 2007, I embarked on medical training in London. After my initial training I was attracted to Intensive Care Medicine but at the same time wanted to build on my medical knowledge.

I was successful in being one of the new AIM HST trainees in the East of England Deanery and also in being selected for dual ICU training two years later.

I completed all my training within Cambridgeshire and had the privilege of working at Cambridge University Hospital (CUH) for four years. It was a great honour that on completion of my training I was appointed as a consultant in acute and intensive care medicine at CUH in 2018 - I have never looked back!

Since then I grew to take an interest in leadership and became interim lead Feb 2020 (maternity cover), then speciality lead March 2022 and Interim Clinical Director of Acute services. During the COVID pandemic I had led on various changes to meet the demands and have subsequently been involved in large scale changes to help improve flow, efficiency and patient care.

Personal interests

When not at work I enjoy travelling around the world and spending time with my two young kids and wife.
