East of England Neurosurgery Network - Patient Community Voice video transcript

00:00:00:00 - 00:00:01:06

Hello and welcome.

00:00:01:06 - 00:00:02:01

Good morning.

00:00:02:01 - 00:00:05:01

Or a good afternoon, depending on when you're watching.

00:00:05:03 - 00:00:07:13

My name is Daniela, and I'm the patient engagement

00:00:07:13 - 00:00:10:13

lead for the East of England Neurosurgery Network.

00:00:11:09 - 00:00:14:09

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video.

00:00:14:10 - 00:00:18:09

Today, I'd like to share a short overview of what

00:00:18:09 - 00:00:24:09

the Patient Community Voice Group is and how it fits into the wider work of our

00:00:24:09 - 00:00:28:05

neurosurgery network here in the East of England.

00:00:30:00 - 00:00:32:01

So let's dive in.

00:00:32:01 - 00:00:34:09

The East of England Neurosurgery Network

00:00:34:09 - 00:00:38:12

is a collaborative group of professionals working across the region.

00:00:39:09 - 00:00:43:02

Our shared aim is to improve the quality of care

00:00:43:11 - 00:00:47:02

and these patient experience, and reduce inequalities

00:00:47:02 - 00:00:51:05

in how people access and experience neurosurgical services.

00:00:52:14 - 00:00:54:09

A key part of achieving

00:00:54:09 - 00:00:57:09

this is ensuring that patients

00:00:57:10 - 00:01:01:04

and those close to them are part of the conversation.

00:01:02:15 - 00:01:06:15

That's why we have created a dedicated workstream

00:01:07:14 - 00:01:11:05

and we call it the Patient Community Voice.

00:01:11:05 - 00:01:16:08

So we have covered these elements,

00:01:16:09 - 00:01:19:13

so we are the East of England Neurosurgery Network.

00:01:20:03 - 00:01:24:00

and I was just saying that our group is called

00:01:24:00 - 00:01:28:11

Patient Community Voice, and my name is Daniela.

00:01:28:11 - 00:01:31:11

So our approach is

00:01:32:01 - 00:01:36:02

based on co-production, which means working together

00:01:36:02 - 00:01:39:02

professionals and patients side by side.

00:01:40:02 - 00:01:42:04

We often describe our model

00:01:42:04 - 00:01:46:09

as a pyramid. At the base are the individual

00:01:46:09 - 00:01:50:00

stories, and experiences that people bring.

00:01:50:10 - 00:01:52:11

These are incredibly valuable.

00:01:52:11 - 00:01:55:13

They help us understand what matters most

00:01:55:13 - 00:01:58:13

and where there's room for improvement.

00:01:59:00 - 00:02:02:07

From there, we look for themes and patterns,

00:02:02:11 - 00:02:05:08

things that come up again and again.

00:02:05:08 - 00:02:09:11

This work is done in partnership with patients helping to identify

00:02:10:00 - 00:02:12:11

these key priorities.

00:02:12:11 - 00:02:17:01

Then comes the co-design phase, where patients and professionals

00:02:17:01 - 00:02:20:01

collaborate to develop practical solutions

00:02:20:11 - 00:02:24:09

that can lead to real, lasting change.

00:02:25:06 - 00:02:27:01

We've built flexibility

00:02:27:01 - 00:02:30:01

in how people can get involved.

00:02:30:11 - 00:02:34:02

So you can choose what works for you best.

00:02:36:07 - 00:02:41:14

We have the Patient Community Voice as the center of what we do,

00:02:43:05 - 00:02:47:14

and we have a patient community advisory group where patient

00:02:47:14 - 00:02:52:06

representatives can join the Neurosurgery Network board

00:02:52:06 - 00:02:54:07

meetings, for example.

00:02:54:07 - 00:02:57:07

But we also have the Patient Community Partnership,

00:02:57:13 - 00:03:01:13

which uses an approach called experience based co-design

00:03:02:02 - 00:03:05:02

to help patients and professionals work together

00:03:05:06 - 00:03:08:06

on key topics.

00:03:09:05 - 00:03:10:15

You can also take part in

00:03:10:15 - 00:03:14:15

patient community circles, which are similar focus groups

00:03:14:15 - 00:03:19:02

that look at specific issues that patients have raised.

00:03:21:06 - 00:03:24:06

We're currently working on a questionnaire

00:03:24:13 - 00:03:27:13

co-designed by patients for patients

00:03:27:15 - 00:03:31:07

to gather experiences from across the region.

00:03:34:15 - 00:03:36:14

And we would like to include

00:03:36:14 - 00:03:40:06

as many individualson this project as possible.

00:03:42:10 - 00:03:47:01 We also include existing feedback,

00:03:48:00 - 00:03:52:05

from hospitals surveys or charity reports and other sources.

00:03:52:11 - 00:03:56:03

So we bring in as many perspectives as possible.

00:03:59:01 - 00:04:02:09

The outcomes we are aiming for are three.

00:04:05:05 - 00:04:10:07

First, to build a genuine ongoing dialog with people who’ve used

00:04:10:13 - 00:04:15:14

neurosurgical services. Second, to identify and

00:04:15:14 - 00:04:19:08

implement quality improvement that makes difference.

00:04:20:04 - 00:04:24:05

And third, to create models of best practice

00:04:24:05 - 00:04:27:05

that lead to lasting change.

00:04:29:04 - 00:04:31:10

And here comes the end.

00:04:31:10 - 00:04:34:08

If you have an interest,if you want to be part in what we do

00:04:37:15 - 00:04:43:00

or just learning more, getting involved, just ask questions,

00:04:43:09 - 00:04:47:09

please feel free to email us using the email address

00:04:47:12 - 00:04:55:11

00:04:55:11 - 00:05:00:01

showing here, and this will bring you straight to

00:05:00:01 - 00:05:05:02

an expression of interest form where if you share your details,

00:05:05:02 - 00:05:07:05

we can get in touch with you.

00:05:07:05 - 00:05:14:00

Thank you again for watching, and I hope you have a great

00:05:14:00 - 00:05:16:10

rest of your day.

Next Meetings

Tuesday 27 May at 18:30 or Thursday 29 May at 13:00 (Each session lasts 45 minutes and is held online)

Outcome from previous session: 17th May - Developing Staff Training Content Using Patient Stories

In our recent session on Saturday 17 May, PCV members worked together to shape ideas for staff training format and content based on patient experiences and stories. The group proposed creating short videos that explore different key points of the neurosurgical journey.

We are now moving into the interview phase, where we would like to invite patients to share their stories to create 2 or 3 videos. We are also exploring alternative methods and we have arranged two sessions to hear from anyone who have an interest in this project.

Outcome from previous session: 30th April 2025- "Communication. Let's break it down."

In our second Patient Community Voice meeting, we explored the theme of communication. Through rich discussion, we identified key communication issues that affect patient trust, wellbeing, and care outcomes.

We have now agreed to move forward with co-creating educational content for staff, based on lived experiences, to support more empathetic, effective communication.

East of England neurosurgery network

The East of England Neurosurgery Network (EoE NN) is hosted by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) and was launched in October 2023.

The triple aim of the EoE NN is to improve quality, reduce inequalities, and to improve value of neurosurgical management across the eastern region.

Prior to formalisation of our structure and governance, we operate under the interim motto of “Regional: Collaboration, Support, Mutual aid”. The core EoE NN team includes:

  • Naomi (EoE NN Manager)
  • Ripa (Referral Case Management Coordinator)
  • Kirsty (EoE NN Specialist Nurse)
  • Daniela (Patient Engagement Lead)
