Asthma

We run 3 clinics every week for children and young people with asthma. In addition, we also have a multidisciplinary team (MDT) complex asthma clinic on a Tuesday afternoon where we see children with asthma that is difficult to control or requiring a lot of treatment.

Children are referred by their local paediatrician for an MDT review. There are also 4 asthma transition clinics per year, where the adult asthma lead doctor and nurse join us; this clinic is for young people with asthma that will require care within the adult asthma network, particularly those on omalizumab and Mepolizumab injections.

Video transcript: Peak Flow

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:14,520

A peak flow meter is used

to measure how quickly

00:00:14,520 --> 00:00:16,280

you can blow air out of your lungs.

00:00:17,640 --> 00:00:20,200

Doing a peak flow can sometimes show you

00:00:20,200 --> 00:00:23,760

asthma is getting worse before you

have your usual asthma symptoms.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:26,960

Your best peak flow score

00:00:26,960 --> 00:00:29,960

is the number you normally

get when you're well.

00:00:29,960 --> 00:00:33,040

Your doctor or your

nurse can help you identify

00:00:33,280 --> 00:00:36,000

what your best peak flow is.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:39,840

If you follow your asthma action plan and

take your asthma medications as planned.

00:00:40,160 --> 00:00:43,320

Your peak flow should stay close

to your usual best score.

00:00:44,040 --> 00:00:46,640

You should measure your peak

flow if you feel poorly

00:00:46,640 --> 00:00:49,640

or if you're getting some of

your normal asthma symptoms.

00:00:49,800 --> 00:00:53,600

If you check your asthma action plan,

it will tell you what you need to do.

00:00:57,240 --> 00:01:01,200

Stand up, pull the red pointer

as close to the mouthpiece

00:01:01,200 --> 00:01:02,520

as you can.

00:01:04,400 --> 00:01:06,000

Taking a deep breath,

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:08,640

put the peak flow mouthpiece in your mouth

00:01:08,640 --> 00:01:10,760

and make a good seal

around the mouthpiece.

00:01:11,680 --> 00:01:14,680

Flow out as hard and as fast as you can.

00:01:14,680 --> 00:01:17,680

The red pointer will move to your score.

00:01:18,760 --> 00:01:20,640

Repeat this two more times

00:01:20,640 --> 00:01:23,880

and write down your highest

score out of your three goals.

00:01:24,880 --> 00:01:28,160

If you're breathing tube so

your lungs are tight and sore,

00:01:28,800 --> 00:01:31,800

your peak flow will be lower

than what it normally is.

00:01:32,280 --> 00:01:34,680

Your doctor or nurse might ask you

00:01:34,680 --> 00:01:37,680

to record your peak flow for a few weeks.

00:01:37,840 --> 00:01:40,200

You can record it in your peak flow diary.
