My child is unwell

If your child is unwell, has a temperature or a minor illness (e.g. cough, cold) then contact your GP.

If you are very concerned, contact 111 or go to your local emergency department.

Children on medications that suppress their immune system (e.g. methotrexate or biologics), should also email the Advice Line. Please stop these medications until we contact you.

Children on steroid medication (i.e. prednisolone/hydrocortisone) - do not stop this medication. Please follow sick day rules (if you have been given these). These can be found on your training letter.

Chickenpox/shingles contact

Check your training letter to see if your child is immune.

If your child is ‘chicken pox not immune’ and they are well –email the Advice Line. Confirm details of the contact (when, type of contact and how long in contact). We will be in touch with further guidance.

Regardless of immune status, if your child is unwell with symptoms concerning for chickenpox/shingles (rash, temperature etc.), take them to your local hospital for review as soon as possible.

Measles contact

Email the Advice Line or seek medical advice locally to determine if any actions need to be taken.

If your child is unwell, take them to your local hospital for review as soon as possible. Update our team via the Advice Line.

Flare management

If you are worried about a flare of eye disease (i.e. uveitis):

Phone your local eye clinic and/or go to your local emergency department.

If you are worried about a flare of joints (i.e. arthritis):

Email the Advice Line with as much information as possible about the joints (e.g. when the symptoms started and what has been helping).

If you are concerned your child is unwell, please seek local medical attention.

Where can I get more medications from?

If last supplied by your GP, then you should go back to your GP for a refill.

If you are on injectable medication through home delivery - check the training letter for delivery details.

If supplied by Addenbrooke's – please email the advice line with your child’s:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • NHS number
  • Medication required (including dose, form and frequency)

Please ensure you have given us 2-4 weeks’ notice for routine refills.

I need to book a blood test

This can be arranged through your GP, community nursing team or local hospital. Check with your GP for the best local option.

If you would like a blood test done at Addenbrooke’s, you can contact Clinic 34 (under 16 years) on 01223348903 or the Adult Blood-Test Clinic (16 years and above) on 01223 256998.

I want to chase my child’s blood results

All blood results are reviewed by our team (or in some cases, your shared care provider).

If we are concerned about any of your child’s results, we will contact you directly.

Sometimes results are slightly outside the normal range, and you should not be worried about this.

For patients who are local to Cambridge or have had their bloodwork done at Addenbrooke's, you can sign up to MyChart where you will be able to access the results directly.
