Healthcare Science Specialism: Biobanking/Histopathology.
What does your job involve?
The main role involves the collection and storage/release of consented tissue samples from oncology patients for ethically approved research. This means dealing with fresh specimens that are collected from surgical procedures and dissected in the HRTB by pathologists. We also provide histological services for numerous research projects and clinical trials on both human and non-human material.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is definitely knowing that the service we provide is playing a big part in the research into various diseases (i.e. cancer) which may lead to better treatment and outcomes for patients, and, ultimately, prevention in the future.
Healthcare Science is a broad and fascinating area which can lead to a variety of different roles which are all vital in improving care and making a difference to patients.
What qualifications led you to this role?
I originally completed a Sports Science degree, but my first job role was as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in Histopathology at Addenbrooke’s. I went on to become a Lab Technician for a small veterinary pathology lab, and during my time there was able to complete a degree top-up and gain an IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science degree. On returning to Addenbrooke’s for the Human Research Tissue Bank job, I completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio to become an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
What career opportunities are available?
I’m completing my IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology which should allow progression to a Specialist BMS post.
