Every day, across our hospital, extraordinary people go above and beyond – not for recognition, but because they care. The You Made a Difference Awards shine a light on those moments of compassion, courage and commitment that truly change lives.
This month, we’re proud to share three remarkable stories:
- Rebecca Pheby, Associate Director of Operations (Division C)
- Akhil Samuel, Biomedical Scientist
You Made a Difference – Winner: Rebecca Pheby, Associate Director of Operations (Division C)
When Rebecca Pheby joined CUH in January 2024 as Divisional Director of Operations for Urgent and Emergency Care, she stepped into one of the most demanding roles in the Trust. From day one, Rebecca worked tirelessly with her team to stabilise the Trust’s four-hour ED performance – and the results speak for themselves. Over the past 18 months, she has overseen a steady and sustained improvement.
Rebecca is widely recognised for her strategic clarity, collaborative leadership and operational rigour

In July 2025, Rebecca’s remit expanded to cover the whole of Division C. Her responsibilities now include managing complex operational pathways, coordinating divisional leadership, and driving service transformation. It’s a role that requires precision, empathy and vision – qualities Rebecca demonstrates every day.
Rebecca’s impact has been profound. She has helped secure significant capital funding for urgent and emergency care developments, improving patient experience and working conditions for staff. Her ability to unite teams, meet time-critical deadlines and keep sight of the bigger picture is nothing short of remarkable.
Her efficiency and organisational skills should be studied! Rebecca really knows the individuals within her team and how best to support them.
Rebecca combines operational excellence with a human touch. She understands the pressures of NHS roles and works hard to support her colleagues while delivering long-term strategies that shape the future of care.
Rebecca’s leadership is inspiring. She balances complex demands with compassion, ensuring that every decision is rooted in patient-centred care. Her colleagues describe working alongside her as a privilege – and it’s clear why.
Alice gave excellent clinical care in such challenging circumstances; her bravery deserves to be recognised.
Rebecca is an absolute testament to her profession and someone I find incredibly inspiring.
Congratulations, Rebecca. Your vision, dedication and humanity truly make a difference.
You Made a Difference – Winner: Akhil Samuel, Biomedical Scientist
When Akhil Samuel joined the Point of Care Testing Service in August 2023 as a newly qualified Biomedical Scientist, he brought with him a hunger to learn and a knack for problem-solving. In just over a year, Akhil has become an indispensable part of the team, not only mastering the technical side of the role but also finding innovative ways to make things run smoothly.
Akhil has shown an ability to generate and deliver great ideas that help with day-to-day activities.
Rhys Tassell
Recently, Akhil played a leading role in a critical trial of Point of Care Testing devices in PICU. When early challenges arose in collecting samples during normal hours, Akhil didn’t hesitate, he volunteered to start work at 6am most days to make sure the trial stayed on track.
His dedication and perseverance paid off as this project will assist with decisions around the provision of blood gas devices in the Trust.
Akhil coordinated cover, liaised with suppliers, supported colleagues on the unit, and meticulously collated data for leadership reporting. While others were involved, Akhil’s commitment and leadership ensured the project was delivered under intense pressure.
In just a short time, Akhil has proven himself as a problem-solver, a team player, and a trusted colleague. His efforts don’t just make the service better – they make a difference to patient care across the Trust.
Congratulations, Akhil. Your hard work and dedication truly stand out.
