You Made a Difference - Karen Wheatley

When families face the most difficult moments of their lives, it’s often the quiet acts of kindness that leave the deepest impression. For one family, those moments came during their beloved Nana’s final days on R2 ward. At the heart of their story was Karen Wheatley, a Healthcare Support Worker whose compassion and care made all the difference.

Karen didn’t just do her job—she became a source of comfort, strength, and humanity. Every shift, she made sure the patient and her family were not only cared for, but truly looked after. Whether it was offering a warm smile, a gentle word, or simply being present, Karen’s support never wavered.

Karen went out of her way on every single shift to make sure that my Nana and the rest of the family were looked after.

The family’s experience was deeply personal. The patient’s son stayed by his mother’s side throughout her time in hospital. Karen noticed, and without being asked, made sure he had food, water, and even toiletries so he could freshen up and feel human again. It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes.

Karen made sure he was eating, drinking, even providing toiletries for him to shower and freshen himself up.

For the patient’s granddaughter, who visited with her three-month-old baby, Karen’s kindness was just as profound. Understanding the challenges of caring for a newborn while trying to say goodbye to a loved one, Karen would gently take the baby in her arms, giving the young mother precious time to sit with her Nana in peace.

Karen would happily cuddle her for me so that I could spend time in with my Nana without the stress of my baby being there.

And on the night their Nana passed away, Karen was there once again. As the granddaughter walked in, baby in arms, Karen instinctively reached out, taking the child so that the family could be together in those final, sacred moments.

I walked in with the baby in my arms and Karen instantly put her hands out to take my little girl from me. Meaning that I could go and spend those very precious last moments with my Nana.

It’s hard to put into words what that kind of care means. But the family tried, nominating Karen for the “You Made a Difference” award with heartfelt thanks for the love and support she gave during such a painful time.

Karen Wheatley didn’t just care for a patient, she cared for a whole family. And in doing so, she reminded us all what true compassion looks like.

I cannot thank Karen enough for the support, care, and love that she showed to me and my family during these most challenging times.
