You Made a Difference celebrates the extraordinary individuals whose passion and dedication make a real difference to patients and colleagues alike. Among them was Dr Poe Phyu, a consultant neuroradiologist whose commitment has transformed the experience for many of our youngest patients.

Her story is one of initiative, teamwork, and the genuine drive to improve lives.
Poe arrived at CUH in 2018 as a senior subspecialty trainee, quickly earning a reputation for her dedication and skill. By 2020, she was a consultant, specialising in paediatric neuroradiology.
A highly committed professional who is always striving to put patients first.

Her deep interest in her field and her relentless determination to improve patient care set her apart.
But what truly marked her out in 2023 was her unwavering focus on making MRI scans less frightening for children. Poe refused to accept that distress during scans was unavoidable.
Working hand in hand with the MRI Service Manager and paediatric team, she championed the idea of installing an Audio Visual system within the MRI scanner, a simple tool with the power to calm anxious young patients during what can be a very intimidating experience.

Her passion didn’t stop there. She took the lead in organising fundraising events, including a golf day in Cambridge, and spoke at community meetings, spreading the word on why this project mattered so much.
Thanks to her energy and the support from ACT and other stakeholders, nearly £28,000 was raised to purchase the AV system, with a total fund of about £34,000.
Since its installation, the difference has been remarkable. Children now face MRI scans with less anxiety, leading to fewer cases where general anaesthetics are needed.
The new system supports those who are claustrophobic, helping them stay calm, comfortable, and cooperative. And the improvements have had a wider impact, reducing repeat scans, easing pressure on theatres, and increasing overall MRI capacity.

Poe’s passion, teamwork, and willingness to take action have improved the care we provide.
Her work over the past two years demonstrates that even small innovations can lead to significant change, helping ensure that every child’s experience is better, kinder, and more comforting.
Her dedication has made a real, tangible difference
