Every day, across our hospital, extraordinary people go above and beyond – not for recognition, but because they care. The You Made a Difference Awards shine a light on those moments of compassion, courage and commitment that truly change lives.
This month, we’re proud to share three remarkable stories:
- Nico Jonas, Paediatric ENT Consultant
- Savitriben “Savi” Patel - Housekeeper, Medirest
You Made a Difference – Winner: Nico Jonas, Paediatric ENT Consultant
When Nico Jonas joined CUH in 2013 as a Paediatric ENT Consultant, he brought with him a wealth of experience – from fellowships at Great Ormond Street and in New Zealand to years of specialist training. Today, Nico cares for children with both routine and complex ENT conditions, including those requiring intricate airway procedures. But what truly sets him apart is not just his expertise – it’s his kindness.
Nico is known as a friendly and approachable member of the team, always willing to help and support colleagues.

Families describe Nico as someone who makes hospital appointments less daunting and even fun. His patients adore him, and his colleagues value his willingness to advise and share knowledge. Nico doesn’t just do his job – he goes above and beyond.
One parent, whose child Nico has cared for over ten years, calls him “the perfect Consultant.” Their words paint a picture of a doctor who listens deeply, explains clearly, and never hesitates to go the extra mile.
He is kind, approachable and ready to listen – in depth – to the child’s and parents’ concerns.
A few years ago, that family mentioned a new surgical technique they had heard about. Nico didn’t dismiss it. Instead, he explored the option, liaised with colleagues, and referred the child to Southampton Hospital for the specialised procedure. It was extra work, requiring coordination and persistence – but Nico made it happen.
The result? Life-changing. The child, once struggling with unilateral vocal cord paralysis, now speaks confidently and has even started singing lessons – something the family never thought possible.
Nico’s care doesn’t stop at the hospital door. On more than one occasion, he has written letters to the child’s school, ensuring they received the support they needed. Those letters made a real difference to their education and wellbeing.
We are so grateful for what he did. Nico is an exemplary Consultant, and we are delighted he was part of our child’s journey
Nico’s blend of clinical excellence, compassion, and commitment embodies everything the You Made a Difference award stands for. His patients and colleagues know they can count on him – and that’s why this recognition is so well deserved.
Congratulations, Nico. Thank you for making such a profound difference.
You Made a Difference – Winner: Savitriben “Savi” Patel - Housekeeper, Medirest
When Savi Patel joined the team in 2019, she quickly became known for her hard work, kindness and unwavering commitment to patients and colleagues. Her supervisor describes her as someone who truly lives the Trust values of safe, kind and excellent every single day.
Savi is a hardworking and conscientious member of the team. She has a very caring nature towards patients and colleagues.

Savi’s role may not always be in the spotlight, but her impact is undeniable. She doesn’t just do her job – she makes a difference in ways that transform patient experiences.
One family shared how Savi changed everything for their mum during a stay on T2. In her 80s and recovering from a fall, the patient had been diagnosed with heart failure and weighed less than five stone. Eating was a struggle – until Savi stepped in.
Savi was truly amazing. She spent time with mum before meals to make sure she had something she wanted to eat.
Savi learned the patient’s preferences and went out of her way to ensure they were available. She encouraged her at every mealtime, even leaving detailed instructions for other staff when she was on a break. Two separate team members commented on how clear those instructions were – a sign of Savi’s dedication.
It wasn’t just the big gestures. Savi noticed the small details that mattered: saving favourite biscuits, opening tricky packets, making fresh toast when it wasn’t hot enough. These thoughtful acts made the patient feel cared for and valued.
She was a star! Mum gained weight on T2 – Savi was the reason for this and made more of a difference than she will ever know.
When the patient was discharged, her family thanked Savi personally. Her humble reply? “It’s my job.” But to that family, it was so much more. It was compassion in action.
Savi may not realise the impact she has, but everyone around her does. Her kindness, attention and commitment embody the spirit of You Made a Difference. She is, quite simply, a star.
Congratulations, Savi. Thank you for making such a profound difference.
