Medicine for Members: Breast cancer screening and what to know about dense breasts

Around one in 10 women aged 50–70 have very dense breasts, increasing their risk of breast cancer and making it harder to detect with standard breast screening.

Dr Fiona Gilbert, consultant radiologist at CUH, led the BRAID study involving over 9,000 women with dense breasts. She discussed what it means to have dense breasts, the results of the trial and how can the risk of breast cancer be reduced.

Louise Duffield, a CUH patient and one of 85 women diagnosed early with breast cancer through the study, also joined the conversation and shared her story.
