Job title/role

Specialist biomedical scientist

Department/area

Clinical immunology laboratory

Healthcare science specialism

The immune system

What does your job involve?

My role in the laboratory is to investigate patient blood samples for a range of disorders effecting the immune system.

Examples of our tests include:

Allergy screening

Myeloma monitoring

Coeliac disease screening

Much of the work is carried out on automated analysers, allowing for a high through-put of samples each day. Other duties may involve carrying out routine maintenance on equipment, training junior staff and monitoring stock levels.

What role did you and your team play in the COVID-19 response?

2020 was a challenging year for our department. Despite everything Covid-19 brought, we were still able to maintain a full immunology service throughout the year.

Our team also developed a Covid-19 antibody test from scratch, allowing staff and patients to see if they have circulating antibodies against the virus. The department won a “You Made a Difference” award for this work.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I leave work each day knowing that I’ve made a difference in the diagnosis and treatment of many patients. The work carried out by the pathology department is vital for the speedy and accurate diagnosis of many illnesses and I’m proud to be part of that.
