GMC number:

Professor Geoff Woods qualified from Birmingham Medical School and is an Honorary Consultant and University Professor of Human Genetics. He trained and worked in Oxford, Melbourne and Leeds/Bradford prior to settling in East Anglia.

Special Interests

Academic activities take up half of my time and I run a research team finding and understanding the genes that cause a number of genetic problems, but particularly children with small brains (called primary microcephaly) and people who feel either no pain or excess pain due to an underlying genetic condition.

General clinics

Professor Woods oversees the general Clinical Genetics service for West Suffolk. The clinics are monthly in the general and children’s outpatients at the West Suffolk Hospital, and at the Child Development Centre in Hospital Road, Bury St Edmunds. The team consists of Mrs. Vicki Wiles - Principal genetic counsellor, Mabella Farrer - genetic counsellor in addition to Professor Woods.  Professor Woods also offers an on call service for the Neonatal Unit and can sometime see urgent prenatal genetics referrals at his WSH clinic, especially if the family are unable to travel to the weekly prenatal genetics clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Junior medical staff in training may also be present in clinics and encourage other doctors in training to sit in clinics.

Specialist clinics

These include eye genetics (with Miss Louise Allen, monthly at the Addenbrooke’s Hospital), paediatric neurology genetics (with Dr Alasdair Parker, consultant paediatric neurologist) and genetic pain (with Dr Dan Wheeler, consultant anaesthetist). Each of these clinics offers a specialist one-stop service for complex or very rare conditions.
