Dietitian team (transplant nutrition team)

There are six different dietitians who work within the transplant unit. Who you see will depend on the transplant you have had.

Liver transplants

There are three liver transplant dietitans. You will usually first meet them as part of your transplant assessment and then be reviewed by them in the waiting list clinic while on the transplant waiting list. Following a transplant the dietitian will review you on the ward to help you to get the nutrition you need while your body heals from the operation. Once you have gone home from hospital, if you are coming to Addenbrooke’s for follow up appointments, you’ll also see a dietitian as part of your follow up service.

Kidney and kidney-pancreas transplants

There are two kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant dietitians. You will usually first meet them on the ward following your transplant. They will make sure you are getting the nutrition you need to heal after the operation, monitor the potassium and phosphate in your blood and help you to regulate this if the levels go high. Once you have gone home from hospital you’ll also see a dietitian as part of your follow up service.

Small bowel transplants

There is one small bowel transplant dietitian, although you will also meet the PN (parenteral nutrition)  team during your visit. You will usually meet them first when you come to Addenbrooke’s for a transplant assessment. They will next see you on the ward following your transplant. They will help you with the progress from PN to meeting your full nutritional requirements from eating and drinking. They will then remain in contact with you once you have gone home to support you nutritionally.

Dietitians see patients in the following transplant clinics:

  • Monday morning, post liver, kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant clinic – clinic 12
  • Tuesday morning, liver transplant waiting list clinic – clinic 12
  • Thursday morning post liver, kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant clinic – clinic 12

Patients who have had a small bowel transplant are usually followed up by the dietitian when they come in for tests and via the telephone.
