CUH Arts invite you to join a series of free creative and friendly workshops led by artist Ivan Morison. Together we will explore the clays, rocks, ash and natural materials found in the East of England. We will see how these materials can be turned into colours and glazes for ceramics. What we learn will help shape the artwork being made for the welcome space of the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.

These workshops are for people who have experience of cancer care, either as patients or staff. You do not need previous art experience to take part. The sessions are about learning, trying things out, talking together, and discovering how natural materials can help create calm and welcoming space in the new hospital.

Clay Formation: Introducing the Project and the Landscape

We will introduce the art project and regional clays. Explore how clay is formed, what makes each type different and how this can affect the look and feel of the final artwork. We will discuss how art can support people and improve a hospital environment.

Testing Materials: Creative Workshops at Wysing Arts Centre

With help from ceramicists, we will learn how to use local materials to make ceramic glazes. We will make small test tiles and look at how colour, pattern and texture emerge after firing. These tests will help guide the designs for the final artworks.

Sharing Findings: Discussion and Celebration

We will bring together everything we have discovered and the ideas that grew from the workshop sessions. We will discuss how our findings can help shape the art commission, and how creative work can support people during difficult times.
