Artificial Pancreas
Teams in Cambridge led by Prof Roman Hovorka developed an artificial pancreas, an electronic system for regulating blood sugar in diabetes. The system is connected to a phone app and automatically monitors and adjusts blood sugar levels, just like a real pancreas. It is one of several systems now available on the NHS.
CamPROBE
A device developed by Dr Vincent Gnanapragasam that means fewer people need a stay in hospital when undergoing tests for prostate cancer. The simple tool allows samples to be collected from the prostate while administering local anaesthetic. Compared to other methods, it causes less discomfort, avoids the need for hospital admission and has a lower risk of infection.
