The paediatric cardiology team provides the best possible evidence based care for all infants, children and young people with cardiac conditions.

Our mission

  • To provide the highest quality of care for children and families with suspected or affected by cardiac conditions.
  • To provide a service that is child friendly, accessible, safe, effective and consistent and is delivered with the family at the centre of everything we do.
  • For patients and families to be supported by staff who are caring, motivated and appropriately trained.
  • To continually assess and improve the care we provide.
  • To actively recognise clinical and scientific research, in order to help improve the understanding, treatment and management of children with a cardiac condition.
  • To work alongside other local and surgical cardiac centres to support our ultimate goal of providing the highest quality of care to the children with cardiac conditions in Cambridgeshire and surrounding areas.

About our service

The paediatric cardiac service requires multi-disciplinary input to provide a high quality service at a level 3 centre.

Our goal is for the child and young person to be able to fulfil their potential in all areas of growth and development, without any restriction associated with their condition. Care is therefore planned to the individual needs of the child and family.

Transition clinic

For young people aged 12-16 years old who need ongoing cardiology care into their adult life - ACHD - Adult congenital cardiac disease.

  • We run a video transition clinic with our psychology prior to their transition clinic with Papworth team to go through further information and lifestyle factors.
  • We work closely with Royal Papworth Hospital which is currently led by Dr Victoria Stoll, Dr Clive Lewis (Consultant cardiologist in ACHD) and Mrs Carole Phoenix, and Kiko Olana (Specialist cardiac nurses in ACHD from Papworth), and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Fetal medicine clinic

Fetal echocardiogram scans are undertaken in the Rosie hospital - looking at the heart of the fetus. A member of the cardiac nurse specialist team will aim to be present with you during the appointment with Dr Yates and his cardiac sonographer Jo Wolfenden. We will meet with you and offer ongoing support during your pregnancy. If a cardiac diagnosis is made we will offer support, guidance and counselling.

Preparing for your appointment

We have made a playmobil animation to prepare children and families coming to cardiac clinic and what to expect.

Hello.

0:04
My name is Poppy and my name is Oscar.

0:09
We thought you might like to know about that heart clinic in Addenbrooke's

0:15
Hospital where babies and children come to get their hearts checked.

0:19
Using a machine called Echo

0:22
Clinic six is a specially

0:25
for babies, children and young people

0:28
who come to see doctors, nurses

0:31
and other lovely people.

0:36
When you arrive for an appointment, your mum, dad or grown up will check you

0:41
in. So the doctors and nurses know you have arrived.

0:46
You might want to bring in activity to keep you entertained.

0:50
One of the lovely nurses will

0:53
then come and take you to be weighed

0:58
on some scales and see how tall you are.

1:04
Some times this may happen

1:07
after your appointment.

1:11
The nurses will use a light up sticker

1:15
to see how much oxygen is in your blood.

1:18
It doesn't hurt and a machine

1:20
will be used to measure your blood pressure.

1:24
This squeezes your arm, but it only takes a short time if

1:30
if you can manage to keep still,

1:34
the doctors or nurses will then call you through to the appointment room.

1:39
We have lots of fun things to play with,

1:44
the doctor will talk to you and your grown up

1:48
and listen to your heart with a stethoscope.

1:57
Your grown up will be with you

2:00
throughout the whole appointment

2:04
and can sit next to you.

2:08
Cold jelly is used on your tummy and chest so the machine can see your heart.

2:14
It doesn't hurt, but some children say it can be a bit tickly.

2:18
It really helps.

2:19
If you can stay still, it will take about

2:23
10 minutes to get good

2:25
pictures.

2:33
The pictures are clearer when the lights are turned off

2:37
there are glow up stars on the ceiling to look at.

2:41
But if you find it easier, you're grown up.

2:44
Can bring something for you to watch during the scan

2:47
or bring your favorite teddy along with you.

2:51
We would love to meet them.

2:53
We have enough pictures

2:56
that jelly is wiped off

2:59
and you can sit back

3:03
with your grown up.

3:09
Sometimes an ECG might be needed.

3:13
This looks at the signal from your heart.

3:18
This doesn’t hurt and only takes a few seconds.

3:23
Ten stickers are used with wires connected to our special computer

3:29
to read the signal.

3:32
One sticker is put on each arm

3:37
and leg and the other six

3:41
are put across the chest.

3:44
The doctor can then look at

3:48
the picture in your

3:53
appointment.

3:54
If don't need any more tests you can go

3:57
home.

4:00
I hope this film has helped you understand what will happen at your appointment.

4:05
If you have any questions, please ask your grown up to call

4:09
a specialist nursing team for advice. Bye.

4:14
We look forward to seeing you in

4:17
clinic.
