As consultant neurosurgeon I lead the largest and most comprehensive regional neurovascular and neurotrauma service in the UK.  My surgery is for high risk vascular conditions with a national referal base (Times citation 2001), which attracts International Clinical and Research Fellowships. Exceptionally low mortality has been recognised nationally (CHI 1998), and internationally through multicentre surgical studies for carotid disease and intracranial aneurysms.

I have a national reputation for surgery of difficult intracranial aneurysms, and for evaluating and treating (extracranial to intracranial bypass) patients with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency.

The service requires interaction with, and leadership of, personnel from several specialties.I developed the Addenbrookes Neurovascular Unit, and was awarded the Neurology Doctor of the Year Award 1999 recognising team work, quality audit, patient satisfaction, good clinical outcome with high clinical research productivity.

My work  is emergency based with a high on call and out of hours commitment (>60hrs per week). Besides general neurosugical patients I deal with 160 subarachnoid haemorrage (SAH) patients, 70 major head injuries, and 150 elective cases with carotid occlusive disease per annum. Multiple, staged procedures are common with high committment to neurointensive care (largest in UK) to which I am surgical lead.
