Nicola Fegan – occupational health nurse

Nicola Fegan has been a nurse for 39 years and shares her story with us.

I love the friendliness of such a large hospital and the excellent care we give our patients.

I am a wife, mother of two boys and granny of five and have been a nurse for 39 years. I have worked in four different hospitals in West Yorkshire, East London and Essex in different nursing roles. I spent time in the community as a practice nurse and women’s health nurse before coming to Addenbrooke’s.

Nicola Fegan

I retired in July 2019 from my role as matron for gynaecological and maternity services after 15 years, but returned two months later to work part time in occupational health. I love the support I have had for learning and the opportunities I have experienced.

I could not have been successful without the support of my band 7 ward and clinic managers, and the great teams I led.

My role at CUH helped consolidate my passion for women’s health and, at the end of my role I had responsibility for Daphne ward, Lady Mary ward, Sara ward and clinics 21, 24 and 25.

My best days at CUH include going to the opening of the Rosie Hospital new build in 2013 and speaking to the Queen as I had just finished chemo for breast cancer. Then receiving the news that the cancer had been cured by the wonderful teams at CUH.
