Mike Tapp – associate director of informatics in eHospital

Our long service awards recognise members of team CUH who've worked for the Trust for 20, 30 and 40 years. We wanted to share some of their stories with you. Mike is celebrating 30 years at CUH.

I joined the organisation as a trainee accountant in 1990 and the vast majority of my employment at CUH was within finance, but I moved to eHospital about eight years ago.

I believe what makes CUH a fantastic organisation is the way we all support each other, always going that extra mile for each other in support of CUH objectives and service

What I love about CUH is a combination of the people (both new and old), many of whom I consider to be lifelong friends, and what CUH itself represents to the wider public. I regularly stand in awe of my operational colleagues and the way clinical staff always go the extra mile for our patients. Additionally, it’s also about what CUH represents to the community and what it provides in terms of services.

Like a lot of others, my loved ones have been cared for at CUH and so I know what we represent to the public. I cannot fault anything about the care my loved ones received and it further enhances my view of what an amazing organisation I am part of.

I might possibly be the only CUH member of staff to turn up to a CUH investment committee in Karate gear and place my black belt on the table before asking for funding approval (it worked!).

I’ve seen many changes during my time here, from becoming an NHS Trust to becoming a Foundation Trust. From seeing the Addenbrooke’s Treatment Centre going up, the neonatal unit going in, the emergency assessment unit being craned in, or the modular wards and theatres going live. I still remember the talks from Richard Howe around the 2020 vision thinking that’s so far away and now I see the campus thinking wow.

I guess a quite relevant recent change has been that my teams and I currently work permanently from home. It shows how much technology has moved on in support of such working practices and what a very different world we live in since the pandemic.

Say thank you
