Introduction - Our Hospitals and Services

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) provides accessible, high-quality healthcare for the local people of Cambridge, together with specialist services, dealing with rare or complex conditions for a regional, national and international population. The Trust is recognised as a centre of excellence and innovation with many of the hospital specialists being leaders in their field. CUH also provides satellite and outreach services at other locations to meet the needs of patients, e.g. in other hospitals, GP practices, and in patients’ homes. On occasion we outsource treatment to the independent sector although we retain notes about our patients and ensure robust handovers of care. Models of care at CUH have been continually developed during the covid pandemic or recovery phases, and virtual wards will also feature in our care delivery strategy going forward, including opportunities to monitor or treat patients in their own homes (e.g home telemetry service)

Our commitment to our patients and our community is as an open, accountable and responsive organisation that fosters patient and public involvement. The Trust achieved NHS Foundation Trust status in July 2004 and as such has a Council of Governors and a membership of approximately 20,000. This comprises of patients, staff and members of the public who are actively involved with the Trust, ensuring that our services reflect the needs of those using them.

Our headquarters is Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie Hospitals in Cambridge. Addenbrooke’s Hospital provides emergency, surgical and medical care for local people and is the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the East of England. It is also a regional centre of excellence for specialist services such as transplantation, cancer, neurosciences, paediatrics and genetics. Based on the same site as Addenbrooke’s, the Rosie Hospital is a women's hospital and the regional centre of excellence for maternity care.

Our Vision and Future

CUH's vision is to improve people's quality of life through innovative and sustainable healthcare. CUH is well positioned to enable the integration of our three core activities of clinical care, research and teaching through its position as:

  • A local District General Hospital for the Cambridgeshire community;
  • A specialist hospital on a supra-regional and national basis;
  • A teaching hospital for the University of Cambridge; and
  • A major academic and clinical research centre

CUH’s mission to provide outstanding care, teaching and research, with a local focus is supported not only through the high calibre of its workforce and continuing service innovation but as a partner organisation in the development of Cambridge’s biomedical campus. Royal Papworth Hospital’s relocation to the Campus in 2019/20 as well as Astra Zeneca’s decision to position their headquarters on the campus provides opportunities for collaboration in continuing healthcare excellence.

CUH’s Strategy

We set out an ambitious agenda for care, learning and research for the next three years, articulating the next phase of longstanding priorities as we come out of the pandemic, such as:

  • Tackling the backlog and long waits for planned care
  • Providing emergency care to a growing and ageing population
  • Building a culture of continuously improving outcomes, experience, value and equity
  • Conducting world-leading research with academic and industry partners
  • Ensuring we are sufficiently staffed, and that all our staff feel equally valued and can thrive

We also set out opportunities to realise our potential over the next three years, under 3 key strategic programmes (Improving patient care, Supporting our Staff and Building for the future) to promote:

  • Working more closely with primary, community and social care partners, and using technology, to help patients to stay well at home
  • Working more closely with other hospitals in our region to increase local access to specialised services
  • Tackling inequalities in access to, experience of, and outcomes from our services between different patient groups
  • Delivering major new hospital builds on the CBC: Cambridge Children’s and Cancer Research hospitals
  • Reducing our carbon emissions on the way to NHS net zero to tackle the climate emergency

All three programmes are focused on improving the quality, safety and experience of care for our patients. The Board believes the programmes are complementary and together will support the delivery of the strategy.

Our Values

Our values are 'Together - Safe, Kind and Excellent', and are at the heart of patient care, defining the way we work and behave.

Partnership Working

Our commitment to build and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with the research community, NHS and social care organisations supporting our aim to ensure patients get the right care in the right place at the right time. We are a key member of the Integrated Care Board (ICB) serving a million people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
